The Amazon River Basin hosts the most extensive tropical rainforests ecosystem in the world. In the face of socio-economic stress, this ecosystem is experiencing the most rapid land-use change on the planet. This course will introduce you to environmental changes in the region from a socio-ecological system point of view. We will explore the drivers of these changes, the transformation in ecosystems and society, and the feedback mechanism connecting the two. You will learn classic paradigms of climate and sustainability studies on Amazonia in addition to practical skills used in international development projects. My target is to help you develop system thinking for a more comprehensive grasp of environmental issues of the region and beyond.
